The Beginnings of Empire
September 24 - 26, 2004
This is closed to the public.
This conference will bring together those involved in producing an edited volume that will address the question: At what point does a state become an empire? The volume will study the beginnings of past empires, identify general principles about how empires begin, and draw out implications of these principles for current U.S. policy. During the conference, authors will present and discuss their papers. The project will help historians and policymakers understand the phenomenon of empire more generally and comparatively.
