AboutAlex Palmer:
AlexPalmer is a senior in Quincy House concentrating in Social Studies with a focuson conflict and ethics. He has worked with refugee children in Venezuela andKenya, and founded a small NGO that provides educational opportunities forrefugee children in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kakuma, Kenya. Alex took the photosfor "The Beautiful Resistance" last summer while volunteering atAl-Rowwad Community Center in Aida Refugee Camp in the West Bank as aHauser Fellow for Human Rights.
Aboutthe Beautiful Resistance exhibit:
Duringone of my first days in Aida Refugee Camp, the deputy director of Al-Rowwadtold me that photographers who came to the West Bank tended to focus on a fewthings: the wall dividing Israel from the West Bank, the Israeli soldiers, andthe checkpoints. What the photographers did not document, the deputy directortold me, was the "beautiful resistance" which Al-Rowwad has worked toadvance. Through arts, theater, education, and cultural programs, Al-Rowwad hashelped to turn Aida from a place of violence to a place of hope andbeauty.
Withthis exhibit, I wanted to document the ways in which the refugees living inAida embody the spirit of the "beautiful resistance." In a situationthat would cause many to feel only anger and despair, the refugees live eachday with compassion and joy. By loving and taking care of each other, theydemonstrate that, no matter the circumstances, we can all live lives of beauty.
