DESCRIPTION:<h3>"The Diasporic Circuit of Culture: 'Global' Hinduism in India's Transnational Professional Class"</h3><p> </p><p>Smitha Radhakrishnan's work focuses on the emergence of a new transnational Indian class of information technology (IT) professionals, and explores the symbolic importance of this culture in constructing a new idea of India.  In this talk, she will discuss the case of upwardly mobile South African Indians, arguing that these "subaltern" Indians highlight the importance of a particular version of "global" Hinduism in understanding the religious culture of this professional Indian class formation.<br><br>Smitha Radhakrishnan is an assistant professor of Sociology at Wellesley College. Her courses stem from her continued interests in the intersections between gender, class, nation, and political economy. Before joining the faculty at Wellesley, Professor Radhakrishnan was a Global Fellow at UCLA’s International Institute.
