The fall 2021 issue of *Centerpiece* highlights the Center's recent activities, including program updates, feature articles, new books, and more. The Center's new director, Melani Cammett, shares her vision for the WCFIA in the coming months in the [Message from the Director](/publications/centerpiece/fall2021/director "Message from the Director") column. Four of our Undergraduate Associates detail their experiences doing thesis research over the summer—either locally or abroad—in our annual [Dispatches feature](/publications/centerpiece/fall2021/dispatches "Dispatches: Undergraduate Researchers in the Field"). Our second feature article, written by Graduate Student Affiliate Harry Oppenheimer, delves into the world of cybersecurity and international relations in "[Managing Digital Interdependence](/publications/centerpiece/fall2021/feature_managing-digital-interdependence "Managing Digital Interdependence")." The [Canada Program](/publications/centerpiece/fall2021/prog_canada "Canada Program") update provides details on its current group of affiliates; the [Weatherhead Research Cluster on Global Transformations](/publications/centerpiece/fall2021/prog_wigh "Weatherhead Research Cluster on Global Transformations (WIGH)") shares news about how the cluster has managed community during the pandemic; and we announce the newly awarded Kenneth I. Juster Fellows in our [Student Programs](/publications/centerpiece/fall2021/prog_student "Student Programs") update. Finally, we mourn the loss of four Center affiliates who passed away recently in our [In Memoriam](/publications/centerpiece/fall2021/in_memoriam "In Memoriam") column.

*by Melani Cammett*

As my first semester as director of the Weatherhead Center winds down, I want to thank our community for its tenacious commitment to our shared goals during the pandemic. Research marches on, while we continue to don our masks at the office and learn how to optimize our hybrid events. We have many conferences scheduled for the spring 2022 semester that were postponed from the previous year, and everyone is excited to reengage in person on academic matters...

### [Managing Digital Interdependence](/publications/centerpiece/fall2021/feature_managing-digital-interdependence "Managing Digital Interdependence")
*by Harry Oppenheimer*

After the US-Russia summit in Geneva, Switzerland back in June 2021, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a news conference where he made several apparently questionable claims. In one of these, he asserted that Russia was not a significant source of cyberattacks around the world...

### [Dispatches: Undergraduate Researchers in the Field](/publications/centerpiece/fall2021/dispatches "Dispatches: Undergraduate Researchers in the Field")

Every spring, a select group of Harvard College students receive travel grants from the Weatherhead Center to support their thesis field research on topics related to international affairs. We selected eleven exceptional undergraduates whose research we will support financially as well as in other ways, from helping revise research methods to planning projects that don’t require travel...
